What Do You Know About Chicago's History of Black Muslims?
The Nation of Islam (NOI) started in Detroit in the 1930s, but when the Honorable Elijah Muhammadtook leadership he relocated to Chicago and built Temple No. 2 in the South Shore neighborhood. The Chicago Reader, the city's free weekly newspaper, recently produced a beautiful web short documenting the Nation of Islam’s influence on Chicago's south side during the 1960s and 1970s. The Reader highlights how the NOI brought economic development to the South Side with business and education centers like Your Supermarket and the Muhammad University of Islam.
